How Does Parasailing Work?

Parasailing is one of the best ways to see the world from above. In this adventure activity, participants are attached to a large parachute with a harness that is attached to a boat via a towline. Once the boat starts to move, the parachute is lifted up into the air by the winch and the wind to offer a breathtaking view of the scenery below. This is a popular activity that is available in many parts of the world, but only a select few areas of Canada. It can be both thrilling and safe if you follow the necessary guidelines.

Things to Know Before Going Parasailing

Location

Most parasailing operators are located on a shoreline or lake, so if you’re looking to parasail, you’ll need to be near the water. This is because parasailing requires a lot of open space in order to safely deploy and retrieve the chute.

Weather

Parasailing is a water sport, so it’s important to check the weather forecast before booking a parasail excursion. Ideally, you want clear skies and minimal wind and waves. Parasailers need very little wind in order to fly, but too much wind can be dangerous. Parasail chutes are like giant sails, so if there are strong winds, it’s not safe to be up in the air. This is why most operators will not allow parasailers to go up if the winds are too high.

Temperature

Parasailing is done on water, but don’t worry, you don’t have to swim or even get wet if you don’t want to. During mid-summer we do offer a little “dip” of your toes in the water towards the end of your flight for a bit of fun and to cool off.

Age

Some parasailing operators may have an age limit on who can go parasailing. For example, you may need to be at least 5 years old or meet a minimum weight requirement to fly. You can always call us to discuss the specific requirements for your group.

Season

You’ll also want to make sure you go parasailing when the weather is warm enough. Parasailing is generally only done in the warm months, so you’ll want to make sure the weather is warm enough before you go.

When is the Best Time to Go Parasailing?

As mentioned above, parasailing is dependent on the weather, so you’ll want to check the weather forecast before booking a parasail excursion. Ideally, you want clear skies and minimal wind and waves. It’s also a good idea to book earlier in the day because conditions are typically calmer on Okanagan Lake as sometimes the wind can pick up in the afternoon and become to unstable for flying.

How Much Does It Cost to Go Parasailing?

The first thing you’ll need to decide is where you want to go parasailing. Some parasail locations have higher rates because they operate in high foot traffic areas, so make sure you do your research online before you book. Also be weary of claims for price matching or “beating prices by 5%” because it usually means your parasail flight will be shorter. Most parasail operators charge per person, not per ride. This means that if you go tandem, you’ll pay less per person than if you go single. We offer $85 per person all day everyday, because we believe in fair pricing and your ride will be 10-12 minutes in the air!

Parasailing is an activity the whole family can enjoy. Always go with a reputable company and ask your tour operator if you have any specific questions or concerns. We are here to make your experience as memorable as possible.
